The trannys are the same in the 186 and the 3488 the engine is about 10 hp more in the 3488. We have a 186 with 15000 hrs and the tranny didn't get more than a relief valve replaced until 13000 hrs of loader work and haying. It had regular maintenance and oil changes every other year filters every year and not overheated they Will last a long time. As to the cost of an overhaul it's been compared to a 4020 John Deere powershift which costs as much or more. There are far fewer 3488s made and the full side covers on the engine of the 3488 ma's maintenance much harder when you have a loader on it. The lAst year of the 186 had the closed center (pfc) hydraulic system same as the 3488 but the older system is what we have and it works fine for loader work. I have yet to find a nicer loader tractor the new cvt other ivt trannys may come close I haven't run one enough to get used to it and make a good comparison and they are expensive the only down fall is they are not front wheel assist like many for the newer tractors. It was an option but I've been told they didn't stand up to loaders and didn't turn very short. My email is open if you have any question on how to operate or what to look for when buying one
