I understand the engineering perspective you're coming from Kerplooey, but the axle housings are tough enough to take it, especially if you put a plate or plank between the jack and the housing.
In fact either of your proposed methods is perfectly fine. The advantage to jacking under the drawbar support being if you have a large enough bottle jack you won't need much/any cribbing for the jack.
My only concern is if you jack on the axle housing, where are you going to put your stands/cribbing? If you jack on the corner of the drawbar support, you can then build cribbing up under the axle housing.
If you need wood cribbing, just go to Home Depot and pick up a few 4x4's, and cut them into 1' sections.
