I was probably the author of the ad about Splitdorf mags. I can assure you that the early John Deere model D's used a Splitdorf base mounted mag with a manual spark advance and later they used a flange mounted Splitdorf without the manual spark advance. The real early D's even used a Dixie46 magneto with a manual spark advance.
