There are more ways to scam a seller - or buyer for that matter - than you can possibly prepare for or defend against. That is just a cold hard fact of life. But, also know that 99.9% of the folks that will answer your ad are honest folks that mean you no harm.

I have occasionally done deals on CL, and have yet to be scammed. I bought a few things, sold a few things, and generally had good success.

Obvious things like foreign accents (like Nigerian princes) are a good tip off. Anybody that writes you a check for more than an item is worth is getting ready to scam you. Then have you refund the difference. Chances are that the check is no good to start with. Transactions involving large amounts of cash should take place in a secure area with both parties being properly identified to each other.

Now, to some of you guys that seem to think that you are secure in hiding your phone number or email address, let me educate you...

Phone numbers are basically public information. You have an unlisted number? Good luck keeping it that way. If a phone is of any use to you, you need to use it. At some point, you need to get a return call from somebody. Oops - secret is out! Guess what? The only true secret between two people is only possible if one of them is dead. Besides, please tell me how somebody can harm you by knowing your phone number. My number is listed in the telephone directory, and has been all of my life. Telemarketers do NOT look up phone numbers. They block dial an entire exchange. does not matter if your number is listed or not.

Account numbers are public knowledge. Every time you write a check, use a credit card, or use any other n on-cash method of payment, you are giving the other party your vital information. We are completely at the mercy of the honesty of the merchant and the force of law to protect up from wrongdoing. Another cold, herd fact of life.

Now, having said all of that, I suggest that you get on with your life and stop worrying about somebody hurting you over the phone or over your email.
