I don't think generators "need" to be shut down after a certain amount of time. I have 6.5 HP Briggs powered Coleman generator at my off the grid hunting camp. I have rigged it up to a 2 gallon external fuel tank so it can run over 4 hours at a stretch and the external tank is outside the generator shed so I can safely refuel without shutting down the generator.
I don't have any problems running that Briggs engine all day. It's air cooled and I have a separate cooling fan blowing on it. It does not use any oil, but I run 10W30 synthetic and change about every 40 hours.
I think the main thing is that the generator itself has a finite lifespan before it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Every hour you put on the unit is an hour closer to using it up. So I'm sure I will eventually wear out the generator unit long before the motor gives out.
