My 960 used to pull a 10 foot disk, on good ground the 13' disk, a 4 row cultivator (more shovels than your field cultivator) and a 2-16 plow, most all the time in 3rd gear. I would harrow (drag) planted corn fields in road gear with a 4 section harrow. So, your tractor should have more power than you are getting out of it. You aren't getting wheel slip, these things have small rear tires & a lot more power than their weight, you need fluid or weights to get them to really work? Now mine is used almost every day for blading, raking, mowing, and all the utility work. I need to rebuild the rear end (brakes, clutch, 3-point) but use it so much I don't get the time! I have a tractor mechanic that got 'lost' in the IH/Case shuffle, & opened his own shop 5 miles from me, he does a good job on all colors so I'm lucky I guess.

My uncle liked Ford vehicles. He bought a Dodge van once. Rode as well, ran as good, cost the same to drive/ maintain, same thing as the Fords he had. But, he cussed & swore at that Dodge for the 2 years he had it. Went back to a Ford & all was well.

So, best advise for you, is to go ahead & get the JD. You will probably have the very same repair bill within 2 years, and they are very similar tractors. But, you won't notice because it's what you like, and you'll be happy. :)
