Holy Smoke--all I said was "practical" sorry, I'll try over. It's a fact that most of the older row crop tractors were designed in narrow front form because that style was most popular when tractors were styled and a lot of emphasis was given to their "looks". Most tractors of that era show much more balance and proportion in the narrow front version and most wide front versions look "gawlky and clumsy". The wide front axle was positioned out front of the front of the grill because the cultivators and/or other front mounted implements needed the clearance. The first styled wheatland or standard type tractors with their wide front axles look fine. Later tractors of the 60's era and later look fine with either type front end. It's a matter of "taste" too, I think. For instance, to me, a Farmall M or a John Deere A is a much better looking tractor than a Ford 8N or an Allis WD. And to start a real fight, any Case row crop with that extended looking front end is a styling disaster(but an LA is a handsome, brawny tractor). The bottom line is "Whatever Floats Yer Boat"
