Red dye is added when the fuel is sold without highway liquid fuel taxes paid, it's for off road and home heating use only and would bring a big fine if you're caught driving a diesel truck or car on the road with it in the tank. You can use undyed fuel if you want, but it costs more due to the tax. Dyed is fine for a tractor (home heating oil is usually just dyed diesel).
