I've been taken by them, so has my mom. I found out one kept coming by her place wanting to do odd jobs, roof repairs, gutter painting (magic paint that keeps gutters clean). Well, turns out it was magic, as it disappeared after getting her money!
A few things I have discovered the hard way:
I never, never, ever hire someone, or buy anything that I didn't initiate the call! That's a sure way to get taken. If they weren't up to something shady, they wouldn't be out hustling people!
Also never hire a contractor that only works out of his truck. If he or she can't provide a business card with an address, preferably a real business location, not a residence, then the deal is off. Without an address, no possible way to track them down when the deal goes bad. No way to take legal action against a missing person.
Prepaying, that is a touchy subject for me. I generally will not do it unless I am special ordering something from an established business.
As for contractors, absolutely nothing in advance for labor, ever!
Materials, if they can't tie up their money until the job is done, then I will buy the supplies. Paying up front not only is extremely risky, but you are actually paying twice because they are going to take YOUR money and mark the materials up, making THEMSELVES pure profit with no investment!
And never fall for "special offer just today" or "I've got left over materials from the last job, make you a deal right now". Pure lies! Pressure tactics, don't fall for it. Again, that always falls under being approached without requesting the sale or service.
Be careful out there, verify, ask for references, don't make hasty decisions!
