Before letting them spin too often so they still have their square edges (and after trying the thumb thing a time or two and making the circle on my thumb....) I wedge in some sort of pry bar behind the shovel and the shank, to keep the bolt stretched tight. Usually this lets me wrench the nut off. Seems the fastest way. A few stubborn ones you have to go to some of the more drastic means listed.
