Mike, in an engine, make sure they won't contact anything, and outside an engine, makesure they won't contact skin, clothes, ropes, wires, etc. Seem some nasty cuts by poorly installed cotter pins, just common sense of what is safest, and easiest to remove and install. Seen a few with the short leg left protruding like a small knife blade, proper in some places, but not in the dark undercarriage of a truck steering/suspension, it gets bent over and tapped down so the next guy doesn't have a few stitches, like a friend did.
