One more thing, I remember the organic chemistry labs. Copper was added to ether containers to prevent formation of very explosives peroxides. Copper oxide is formed instead of explosive. Are the pennies corroded ? Perhaps your D12 was formerly owed by an amateur chemist with some experimental recipies in his mind ! Best regards.
