I'd sure pump the tank if its been 35 years. Even if working fine, the tank will eventually fill with undigestable solids, and if the solids overflow into the drainfield, it will be toast. And it will happen before you even know about it- no preliminary signals that would let you act quickly and save the drainfield.
No separate gray water systems here- everything has to go into the septic system, per the regulations (and all new systems get a full inspection, so you can't sneak anything through). Ours has worked fine ever since we moved here 30 years ago.
