I don't think they sound the same when not pulling a load. Especially when taking off from a stop. And these engines don't even know anything is behind them when pulling nine cars. Especially passenger cars which are lighter. I could understand the use of only one service crew at their whistle stops if they travel together. But in reality, whistle stops are usually always done where it is double tracked. And I would think it would be more convenient for the service crew to have the engines parked side by side. Then they wouldnt have to cart their equipment from the service car all the way back behind the deisel unit when everything is tripple heading. And as far as scheduling, I don't really see that running two trains, one right behind the other in the same direction, on the same track would be much of an issue. Even 10 miles apart would only mean 10 more minutes.
I don't know. Some of this don't make much sense to me. Just think they could orchestrate something a little neater when they actually do send these things somewhere.
