Sure, its "possible" to replace a cutout relay with a full fledged Voltage Regulator, I've done it, HOWEVER I doubt you will get any exact best match of Genny and VR as in a factory original properly matched Genny and VR system.
If you must convert (I'm NOT saying its engineering exact or will work perfect ONLY it can "work")
The old wire that went to BAT on the Relay goes to BAT on a VR The wire on the relay that went to the gennys ARM post still wires to the gennys ARM post, its connected to GEN/ARM on the VR HOWEVER the FLD post on the genny that used to wire up to the light switch now wires instead to FLD on the VR VR and light switch and genny all need good grounds
Here's the bigger rub and non exact engineering but it can "work"
On a three brush adjustable brush genny one can EITHER set the third brush to the max charge position orrrrrrrr convert the genny over to a two brush. Its still not gonna be any engineering exact matched system
Sure Polarize the GENERATOR (NOT the VR) before start up to be safe.
NOTE if you're inexperienced this may not be for you. The original cutout system works okay and its critical for charge control that the Low High light switch works correct and is well grounded. Ive seen them loose a good ground and also the low charge resistors go bad.
