Here are my two cents worth. Always replace gaskets with the real thing, if available. If not available and you are working on sealing against water, I like marine sealants for boats. This especially true if it may be a swimming matter. A kitchen sink is altogether different.
If you are working on a motor repair, water sealant is different from fuel sealant. Ask at your local auto parts store for the recommended product. Good luck.
