Yahoo is supported by advertising, so you see banner ads and junk mail out the wazoo. Can also be slow at times.

Advantage is, you can check your mail from any internet connection anywhere, and you never have to change your address just because you changed ISP's.

"Free" internet service via an 800 888 or 500 number is much the same. Other "free" services are only available via a long distance call, which gets seriously expensive very quickly.

I use yahoo mail, as I need one central point to check mail from home, office and job sites. Otherwise, I just use my local ISP. Dependable, reasonable, and quick.
