Years ago some friends of mine built a homemade tractor out of an old IHC medium sized truck that had been rolled over and the body ruined. They used the front end without much modification except the removal of fenders, but the frame was shortened to about tractor length and the rear axle was mounted solidly to the frame. In order to get the gear ratio right for a tractor, they mounted a second 4 speed transmission to the output shaft of the original transmission (I think they just welded them together!). Then a short drivesaft connected to the rearend. They used the original dual tires, chained up all the time, for traction and had cast a block of concrete that probably weighed a couple of tons above the rear wheels. The engine was the IHC flathead 6, that never left the chassis. I don't think they had a governor and the hitch was pretty basic, since their implements were way old. With the first transmission in 2nd and the second trans in compound, the tractor would plow fine with 3 or 4 plows. On the other hand, the machine would FLY with both transmissions in 4th. My friends did not use hydraulics or a PTO. The only problems they really had with it had to do with brakes. I have thought that it would be fun and easy to do something similar. I would use the pto from whichever transmission that would get the RPM's about right to do a tractor type pto. For Hydraulics, I believe a pump could be mounted on the front of the crankshaft. There are kits to adapt older tractors for 3 point equipment. I think a governor could be set up using cruise control parts. I would cover the rear tires, because the old machine really threw mud and dust all over us!

Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U
