My bride had my folks over for her birthday 20 some years ago- I had gone to an auction about 150 miles away, but knew about the party and was going to be home on time. I rolled in about an hour late, with a Farmall M on the back- It was my mother who came unglued- the wife just laughed. Turned out better when I advised that I was just hauling the tractor back for a buddy, and that I had a real birthday present hidden in the closet for the Mrs. I think Mom was still touchy from the time Dad got a lawnmower for their anniversary. . .
