Well said. Reading the linked article tells me that Lowe's wanted to lower the assembly cost of things like BBQ grills and rototillers on a per unit basis. Set a price that Lowe's wants to offer assemblers and see who bites on it. Whether the private contractor is efficient or makes money is not important to Lowe's. The deal is so much money is paid for the assembly of each item and that is it. I would bet the notion that the employees who were assemblers now will be floor sales staff will be short lived. I've worked in retail and I know great emphasis is placed on trimming payroll. Retail is about the race to the bottom just like farming has been for a lot of years. It's about offering the least compensation possible before a wide segment of the people affected throw their hands in the air and quit.
