You're NOT going to take down big predators or feral hogs with a .22, nor do you want to get close enough to use a shotgun. AR's and AK's are great for that. Like you said, those guns cover most needs, not all.
Of course none of this pertains to the purpose of the 2nd Amendment, which is entirely different. There's no such thing as a "military style assault rifle"...
And by the way, fully automatic rifles, machine guns, even artillery pieces are legal with the proper permits. (and a LOT of cash). "Need" has no bearing on ownership.
