When starting use as little throttle as possible, the cold fuel injected into the cylinder will not only wash down the liners as was mentioned, but will cool down the compression heat you are trying to build.
Leave at low setting not just till it fires on all cylinders,but untill oil pressure shows a full reading on your gauge.
The proper method to use any starting fluid is a small ammount WHILE the engine is cranking. Yes a gas soaked rag in front of the air filter will work as well as ether.
What kind of engine are you having a hard time getting to fire, you could spend a few $$$$ on the engine to get it to start without any outside help, BEFORE you blow pistons through the hood trying to get it going with starting fluid!!!!!!!!
