Odds are the gears involved in comprising 3 rd gear have extreme wear and need to be replaced. Also, the possibility of the bearings involved in the 2 gear shafts have extreme wear and need replacing. The tansmission's top cover needs to come off so these two possibilities can be investigated. Bearings most likely can be ordered new while gears and other hardware will have to come from a used parts source.
