Probably can replace it with a six with no changes but once you get it running you should use a volt meter and check the generator output at the generator to be sure that when the eight volt battery was installed somebody did not up the output of the generator. they sometimes did this to get a better charge on the battery. FYI when I got my eight battery at the local auto parts store, it was only ten or fifteen dollars more then a six volt.
