A good automotive electrical shop can rewind your 6v generator for 12v, which will give you the stock appearance. I'm not sure if the regulator has to be replaced with a 12v model, though.

If you have a distributor ignition system, you'll need to add a resistor in line with the coil so that the coil will still get 6v rather than 12v. The 12v will fry it in short order.
