Alfalfa can be seeded either in spring or fall. This depends on available soil moisture and conditions. If spring seeding, you can straight seed preferably into some standing stubble for protection and erosion control, or with a companion crop such as oats. Realize the companion crop should be planted at a reduced rate to reduce competition with alfalfa. Broadcast seeding of alfalfa can be successful with adequate soil moisture. Light harrowing will improve soil to seed contact. With normal precip. you should be able to get a couple of cuttings the first year. Alfalfa in 10% bloom is a general rule for cutting to achieve maximum nutrient value.
