AFAIK Idler gears don't count in gear ratio calculations. They turn a tooth-for-a-tooth with the driver and don't change the driver/driven ratio. However, they do reverse direction of rotation of the driven gear. Think of it this way.. 1 turn of a 40 tooth driver will rotate the idler 40 teeth... which will rotate the driven gear 40 teeth. Just as if they were in mesh without an idler. I don't see anything wrong with his orginal math. -- bbott
