Two things to make sure of. 1) Insurance. Here in PA, it can get you up to a one year suspension of your driver's license for driving without insurance. 2) Make sure that insurance will cover you on the drive home. With or without a license plate.
An alternative idea would be to borrow a dealer or transporter plate for the move. I'm surprised that they won't give you a temporary cardboard plate to drive it home on. I suppose they are afraid you might actually carry something with it.
