Only way to prevent water damage is to NEVER let it get into pump in the first place. Always check and drain if needed at the sediment bowl/water trap, and keep the fuel tank full when not in use. A full tank won't "sweat", or draw moisture like you can see sometimes on tank side, and since tank is vented the moisture you see on outside is on the inside too. Both gas and diesel tanks will draw moisture since they are vented, LP gas does not have the water trouble as tanks are sealed/under pressure.
