Versatile was a Canadian company. When it was first for sale, John Deere was looking at it, but the Justice Dept. wouldn't approve it, because it would have given them too large a share of the market. Then, when Ford got involved, Buhler protested with the Canadian govt., claiming it should remain Canadian controlled. In reality, he was wanting to eliminate any competition to his bid for it, so he could get it for a song. When Fiat needed to sell it in order to purchase CaseIH, Buhler finally bought it. After making a big deal about Versatile being "Canadian owned and controlled", he sold a majority interest in his company to the Russians, with the understanding he would remain in control. He didn't!
