About the only tractor style mowers I deal with are Husqvarna, John Deere and the various MTD/troybilt models. I work for a Husqvarna dealer.
1. STAY away from the plastic transmission models!!!! They are junk! They were junk! and I cannot keep them working smoothly and reliably. General transmission needs to go back to making washing machine transmissions.
2. Regardless of which brand you chose, keep the front axles greased. Husqvarnas tend to get a lot of slop in the steering and after a while develop a severe toe-out condition in their wheels. Then when you back up, the wheels go toe-in and it gets difficult to control the tractor in reverse. Smaller Deere mowers from the box store have a similar setup, but I have only a seen two or three that had the toe-out problem.
3. MTD stuff was pretty much built to meet a price. They also own Toro, Bolens, Cub Cadet, White and some others. The late model Toro, Troybilt, and 1000 series Cub Cadets are practically identical and tend to have the same problems. Short belt life is one of them.
As far as the cast axle models go, The cheaper MTDs are the only ones I know of that still use a stamped and formed front axle. In the last 10 years I have not seen a broken stamped axle beam or a broken cast axle beam either for that matter. But in either case, if it is broken the owner is probably going to need a new front axle. I have seen some broken spindles, but they hit something hard or something else hit them hard for them to break. And I don't recall seeing either the stamped or cast axles even being bent in those cases.

The soil is a rich dark brown and is well looked after. unlike some areas in the midlands it is also fairly flat, broken only by hedgerows and the occasional valley and brook. A copse of wildbreaking silver birch and oak trees surround the top si
