I had an 8N. Had to put a whole new wiring harness on it. I made sure the battery cables were sturdy, not something cheapest possible made for import roller skate. 1 gauge is appropriate, 2 gauge may be adequate. Then I had the starter rebuilt with a new bendix, new bearings, and new brushes with the commutator cleaned and the brushes fit to the commutator. I think it cost about $30 in the local automotive electric shop. Much less than a 12 volt battery and alternator. The 8N started fine with a 6 volt battery after every Iowa blizzard for several years, probably still does, I don't have it any more. There's no need to abuse the starter and the rest of the system with 12 volts if you take care of the same details I did. Gerald
