Yeah, a 440 would usually outrun a 426 Hemi... unless the guy with the Hemi knew what he was doing and was constantly tuning and tweaking on it, then all bets are off. A 440 really had to be out of whack to run poorly.
As for a '32 Ford running away from them, well that was a pretty light car, the Mopars were a fairly heavy car compared to say a Mustang or Camaro.
Put the Mopar power in a car similar to the '32 Ford and once again all bets are off.
