David, I did the same thing last week. My wife and I were in a serious automobile accident and totaled our Navigator in about ten seconds. We were on what they call the 101 Loop around Phoenix where five lanes in each direction are going at least seventy and unbeknown to any of us a semi about a quarter mile ahead of us broke a front axle. I have been around big trucks all my life and have never seen a front axle break like this one did. When I first saw this complete wheel asembly (tire, wheel, hub, spindle and about a foot of the axle.) laying in the road I felt I was home free as it laid one lane to my left and my lane was clear. That was when we were hit in the left rear by a pickup trying to avoid the pile in his lane. It turned out just like you see on television when the police want to end a high speed chase they will hit the car they are chasing in the rear corner. It is very effective as you loose steering control and as we headed right at the cement barrier that separates the east and west bound lanes we took a healthy hit as we bounced off that divider and then reentered the traffic but now we are going backwards down the freeway. By this time everybody sees what is happening and gets stopped. It was now time we all counted our Blessings. My wife was not hurt nor was I, the young fellow in the pickup was not hurt and the truck driver was not hurt. Their has to be several thousand vehicles for sale in this valley so checked with a local small Ford dealer and was met by the owner of the dealership. Found out that he was one of my neighbors and lives less than a mile from me so we were not long and had a new Expedition in the garage.
