Engines used on aircraft are a whole other thing. Think liability.
First thing is that any engine used on an aircraft must be certified for that use by the FAA. The only exception being experimental aircraft and possibly ultra lights.
Second thing is that even if an engine is certified for aircraft use, only a licensed A&P mechanic is allowed to work on it. Only exception there is that the owner of an aircraft can do some of his own maintenance work, but it MUST be signed off by a licensed A&P mechanic.
Anything else opens the door for lawsuits. As such, it makes perfect sense that your employer would want you to avoid engines used in aircraft.
