In my first years, I lived in Franklinvile, NY, home of the Maple Festival, started in '62- I was in first grade. Pretty big event, they even elect a King and Queen. Back then they set up a big evaporator right on the elementary school driveway and let it cook all day- you could smell it all over town. They always had blocks of maple sugar for sale, and many molded into bears, squirrels etc. We each got a critter, and would just chew on them for a couple weeks. I have a picture of that evaporator at the school somewhere
