We have a wooden boat festival every year about 9 miles from my house. There is also a local class you can take where a instructor helps you build your own wooden boat from plans.
While a canoe is nice and more stable most around here build flat bottom pirogue's Nothing like getting into a flat bottom narrow unstable small boat with a antsy dog to go duck hunting.
