I don't know if this will help, but I looked in my JD 1010 crawler loader manual, sold the machine 15 yrs ago. I presume you have a gas unit. The wiring diagram says: Orange wire - Fuel gauge sender to sender terminal on fuel gauge. Purple wire - "L" terminal of starter switch to fuel gauge with pigtail leads to "OIL", "GEN" and "CLU" indicator lights. This is for the original 12 volt positive ground system. Mine had an alternator, 12 volt negative ground, but it came that way so I can't say how it was done but I believe the gauge worked. The "L" terminal on the starter switch also goes to the light switch and hour meter if so equipped.
