I run the same mower, HM235. Had it since new.
I use the chain between the tractor and mower, but only to prevent the mower from dropping too far. I eyeball the quadrant lever position so the chain is almost taking weight.
Your lower links are supposed to be 20" off the ground.
The 2nd cutting height chain should take weight almost the moment you lift the 3pt, should just have a little slack in it mowing. Think I run it on link 8 or 9.
For the remote, you can run in it float like the book says, but I found on wetter ground I let the cylinder hold a bit of weight to help the bar carry better.
I ran it in float all this summer since the ground was so dry and hard.
Make sure your breakaway link is set right, mine was too sensitive.
