Not so much anymore but in my area owning horses used to be sort of a status symbol for those that had acquired some money to show that they had 'arrived' and were now part of the Upper Crust of folks.Taking riding lessons especially for young girls was part of the status thing,pretty much gone now and the price and demand for horses has gone in the dumper.
