The problem has a good chance of being a worn distributor bushing. The timing jumping around is usually not affected by the advance. A worn bushing will allow the points to opwn at odd intervals with the result that the opening timing varies wildly. To see if it is the issue, pull the cap and wiggle the rotor firmly soide to side. there should be zero movement. If you can move it even a visible amount it needs replaced. If you put the dist cam on the rubbing block, and wiggle away from and toward the rubbing block the point gap will change a bunch. A bad advance might allow the timing to be advanced all the time, or advance early if weak springs, but not likely to be retarded from full advance. Jim
