Does that starter have a three piece stop on it? Like a washer would come off first, then the ring inside of a collar. If
it's like that use a deep socket to knock the collar off the snap ring, then work a small screw driver under the snap ring
so you can grab it with nice pliers and work it off.

When going back together install collar, get the ring in the grove, slide washer on and pinch the three pieces together
with two pairs of pliers. Now I've never had a JD starter apart but that method works for Delco starters. Put that end
washer in the way it came apart, lip toward the snap ring.
