Points in general will affect ALL cylinders. It would be a nearly impossible coincidence for points to cause one or two out of four cylinders to misfire. Why take the long way around to troubleshoot a misfire? And, why waste the man's time pointing him in the wrong direction?
I have been working with engines since I was old enough to pull the rope on my dad's old reel lawn mower. I've never seen points cause one or two cylinders to misfire. Normally all or nothing.
