In our area we feed the excess energy into the power grid, and remove it when needed. BC parks had a wonderful arrangement for summer use. A spring of water high on the hills fed a 2 inch plastic water pipe into a sluice box on the back of the building which spun a turbine which in turn powered two 12 volt alternators. They charged a bank of batteries which fed an inverter which in turn provided enough power for a 1400 sq. ft house. Ran everything except a stove, which was propane.
