Yes, we are fortunate that we live in such times. Go back to before WWII and a sizable portion of the US was underfed including many rural folks. Even if the stomach was getting filled a fair number were not getting the calories and nutrients they needed for their body mass. Further, food preservation allows us to have the choice of food that we have today. Again, go back several generations and a loaf of bread at room temperature would barely keep two days before mold set in. Of course bread was such a major staple in nearly all households so a loaf was consumed within a day.
