So what they're doing is to boost the compression ratio up close to that of a diesel. The combustion chamber isn't quite hot enough to ignite the fuel-air mixture, but when the spark plug fires the additional heat causes a diesel-like ignition. But not quite a detonation, either. Depending on operating conditions, the engine may operate as a regular spark-ignited gas engine or as a spark/compression-ignited engine.
It seems that what they're trying to do is to move as much of the combustion process as possible between top-dead-center and 90 degrees after TDC, which is when the piston is accelerating. Gasoline engines typically fire before TDC to try to get maximum combustion chamber pressure in this region. Using the spark/compression ignition, Mazda is able to retard ignition to TDC and still get the maximum pressure during the 90 degree sweet spot.
