I have used left hand drill bits. The cutting edges of the drill bits are opposite those on typical drill bits. The bits are used in your electric drill with the drill running in reverse. When the cutting edges contact the surface of the broken off bolt they dig in and thread the broken portion of the bolt out of the hole. If the bolt is really stuck you still may have to drill through and use a screw extractor. I have removed some broken bolts and screws with these. I have also had instances where they failed to back the screw out. Like everything else nothing is perfect for every situation. You can get a set of 4 bits and screw extractors for about $30. from industrial or machine shop suppliers.
