Test lights that have a ice pick probe with a bulb in it and a wire with an alligator clip ground is the teat instrument of choice. Cheap. Use it first across the battery terminals, right on the posts of the battery. Put the alligator clip on the grounded post and the pick on the other. If light there good. Next keep the alligator clip on the grounded post and move the pic to the non grounded terminal clamp. If light good. Now put the alligator clip on the grounded clamp, and the pick on the non-grounded clamp. If light, good. (by the way if at any time the light does not light, the issue is right there) Now attach the alligator to the location that the grounded battery cable attaches to the tractor. (not the bolt, but the actual cable end that the bolt goes through) and touch the non grounded clamp with the pick. Light is good. Next attach the alligator to the a shiny spot on the tractor frame. Polish a bracket or small bolt heat and clamp it on. Test the non grounded battery clamp with the probe. This whole process checks the ground circuit and the non grounded battery clamp as being good. Leave the alligator hooked where it is and put the pick on the starter relay switch (solenoid) where the big non grounded cable attaches. Light is good, no light the cable is bad (yes it can be bad inside) Next (not using the light) put the trans in neutral and set the brake lock. Make sure the ignition is off. Use a jumper wire to connect from ground (shiny) to the small terminal on the starter relay (solenoid) it may try to start. If it turns, the wire to the push button switch, or the switch is bad. It is a grounded type start relay. If it does not try to start (turn the engine) again use the test light to pick the lead from the starter relay to the starter motor. (alligator grounded where it was) and jump the relay small terminal to ground as before. If a click is heard, but no starter action, and the light lights, the starter may be ungrounded. Put the pick probe on the starter housing (clean shiny spot) and try again. If the light lights this time the starter is not grounded where it mounts, or the new starter is disfunctional, Jim
