Did you adjust the pedal freeplay?
Should have just a little free movement at the top before the release bearing touches the pressure plate fingers.
Too much freeplay and it won't have enough stroke to fully release. Too little and it will soon wear out the release bearing.
Could be the disc in backward.
Did you try sliding the disc on the input shaft to be sure it slid freely? If it's tight it will drag.
How hard was the engine to stab back in? Was a alignment shaft used? If it wasn;t aligned, was a real struggle, allowed to hang on the input shaft, or had to be forced, drawn together with bolts, something may have been damaged. Ideally, it should slide in by hand with minimal force. The pressure plate should always be drawn down evenly in a criss-cross pattern so not to warp it.
And sometimes you just get a bad pressure plate or disc and it will not release. Aggravating!!!
