You have to keep it dry but you also have to let the air move through the pile as well. Pallets work well to keep the wood off the ground and allows air to circulate up through the bottom of the pile.
This is how I store my wood. It seasons very well and stays dry. Even an occasional driving rain or snow storm has very little effect and if the ends get wet, they dry off quickly. I hold the tarps down with old tire chains as they are heavy and conform to the pile. A couple of years ago I picked up about a dozen 6 ft. long heavy rubber floor mats out of a diner. They work even better than chains. Now,..... I have intentions of building a nice woodshed but I've had those intentions going on now for 10 or 12 years. LOL
